Building on the success of its predecessors, this revamped edition features new content to further augment your yoga practice:
- A new chapter offering history and context for the idea that anatomy is a story
- Updated chapters on the skeletal and muscular systems
- A new chapter on the nervous system that outlines its key functions and roles in the body
- Significantly expanded breathing and spine chapters to address disc anatomy and damage as well as back pain
- Newly added Cueing Callouts to provide tips and advice on teaching or performing a pose
- New stick figure icons to simply depict the alignment of each pose for quick reference
- A Breathing Inquiry section with each asana to illuminate the connection between breathing and a movement practice
This beautifully illustrated resource sorts yoga poses into six sections—standing, sitting, kneeling, supine, prone, and arm supports—and provides an inside look into each pose to offer a better understanding of the interactions of the muscles, joints, and nervous system that we use to create movement and breathing.
Authors Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Matthews, both internationally respected specialists in yoga and breath anatomy, offer a solid grounding in the principles of physical practice common to many systems of yoga. Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been practicing for years, Yoga Anatomy will be an invaluable resource—one that allows you to see each movement in an entirely new light.

I must say a lot of work has gone into the production. The devil is in the details!

Smaller book than I expected but exactly what I was looking for. Even though it’s more expensive I’d recommend the spiral bound one 👌

Need this for Yoga Teacher Training. It meets the need

Far more complete and comprehensive than the first edition (I did not see the second edition so can’t compare to that). Page numbers with supposed errors noted below by another reviewer do not line up with this edition so I don’t know what they’re referring to. This book does reference Yoga concepts, so know that those are different than ‘western’ ways of seeing the body — open your mind a bit and let it expand. One huge hole in this book, though – I can find no discussion of fascia, which feels like a giant missed opportunity and oversight. Hopefully a 4th edition will include this. Agree with another previous reviewer that the lack of an index is annoying. These issues aside, it’s beautifully illustrated, clear, thought-provoking, and deeply informative. This book may be a bit much for beginners, but certainly belongs in every serious Yoga student’s library.

This book is absolutely great. It really goes into yoga from a biological point of view describing how our body moves through the motions and positions. It also does a great introduction into the spiritual parts of yoga that can be intimidating to those wanting to begin practicing without any spiritual leanings or foundations. It’s a yoga book without a lot of “the woo” as some might put it and because of that I’ve read it cover to cover. It does of course touch on the spiritual aspects of yoga, because these things are connected but the way it’s introduced is palatable for those of us who usually get turned off by such things. It’s like your gateway into yoga, trust. Also very helpful if you’re wanting to target any specific muscle group or area of the body. Very useful book!!

THis book is written from the most heart-centered place. It is filled with wisdom and dismantles the simple mechanistic model of the body in favor of a more contextual approach. Rich and wise. I’ve used is as a text book in all of the yoga teacher trainings I’ve lead.

I love this book. The authors break down everything. This is my second purchase of this book. I gave the old one to a friend.

I wanted to do some pre-work before starting my Yoga Cert courses. This popped up as one of the most recommended.
Going through it was definitely helpful. The illustrations are the right amount of detail. I even took pictures of some of the images with my phone to create flash cards on my phone.
I felt ready, if not ahead of the curve for my cert classes and continue to use the book as a quick reference guide when describing a new pose.

Leslie Kaminoff is a master yoga educator. Having had previous editions of this book that were used on yoga TTC and have also done one of his Leslie’s courses, you cannot beat the level of knowledge and expertise here.
This is as fabulous as previous editions but expanded. One reviewer said it was complicated but I personally did not find that as I have over 15 yoga anatomy books and this is still the best there is for language, description, explanation and diagrams. Highly recommended for yoga teachers, serious practitioners and those that like to be a bit nerdy on anatomy!

Paid extra for spiral bound. Stays open so I can refer to doing yoga. Well researched for Yoga specific focus on how Asana affect muscles. Easy for new students to understand and learn about the benefits and muscles used.
