Tarot and the Psychology of the Soul is part classic guidebook, part provoking how-to, with a dash of stirring tarot philosophy. With a focus on inspiration and inclusivity for all tarot levels, it begins by establishing how we can view the cards as reflections of the psyche and walks readers through how to use the cards for inner work and shadow work.
Though we turn to it for answers and solutions, the true power of the tarot is as a mirror. With the right approach, it reflects the tapestry of our psyches, illuminating both conscious will and unconscious longing. It teaches us to befriend our shadows, evoke our imaginations, and attune to the soul’s quiet directive: How am I meant to live?
With a tone that is both scholarly and soulful, Mariana Louis guides tarotists—whether beginners or seasoned practitioners—through the archetypal approach. Alongside archetypal interpretations of the cards, she grounds readers in the foundations of depth psychology, inner work techniques, and methods of reading. The following topics are also covered:
- Psycho-spiritual meanings and approaches to the Major and Minor Arcana
- A breakdown of how to apply all that the reader has learned
- Guidance on how to prepare for readings and how the cards communicate
More than a manual for reading the cards, it is an initiation into their archetypal depth. Tarot and the Psychology of the Soul invites you to use the tarot as a living language of the psyche, helping you listen to your intuitive wisdom, embrace your wholeness, and awaken the answers waiting within.

A Happy Reader –
This is an amazing book on Tarot, for both beginners and “old hands” in working with symbol systems for spiritual development. The author, Mariana Louis (who I’ve had the privilege of learning from through her online school Persephone’s Sister) has presented the reader with a guidebook on how to use tarot as a means of journeying deep into the realms of the soul. This is no cookbook, but a carefully curated map for traveling deep into the realm of archetypal knowledge and wisdom, holding up mirrors of self discovery for fellow soul-travelers. This study is for adventurers who are eager to delve into the limitless mysteries of the psyche. Mariana’s book is a masterful guide on using the medium of tarot for self- knowledge and transformation. If you buy only one tarot book this year, you won’t be disappointed with this choice. Thank you Mariana for distilling your years of study and soul discovery here in this brilliant book for our benefit!

Beautiful book on archetypal tarot that dives into the psyche. Would definitely recommend.

The absolute best tarot book I own. It’s truly a complete course on archetypal Jungian-based tarot. It’s beautifully written and presented and covers all aspects of the individuation process. Tarot is viewed and approached through the lens of the conscious and unconscious meeting through the tension of the opposites. An honor to own, a pleasure to read, and a book I’ll return to over and over again.

This is not a typical look-up-the-definition-of-the-card book. I am a huge fan of Jungian psychology as it relates to Tarot and so I’m over the moon that Mariana took the time to lay the ground work to help us understand the “key tenets of Jungian thought”…and depth psychology. Once we have an understanding of Jung’s thought process, we begin our journey on the path to finding our authentic self. This, then, is where tarot can help us on our quest to self-discovery. We learn that Tarot can be more than cards and a guidebook of meanings…but a deeply profound tool that can take us to ever deeper understanding of ourselves and to help us answer the question, “how am I meant to live.” In the beginning of the book, Mariana writes of Tarot: “Essentially, we do not want the cards to tell us how to live, but to help us trust how we live.” This is a powerful book that allows us a more intimate relationship and more spiritual partnership with the cards that ultimately, if we’re diligent, patient, and contemplative…can lead to a better understanding of self & Self. For those who prefer a “guidebook”, the book begins on page 70 (of Kindle) for deeper reflection into the cards. The way she describes and explains the Major/Minor/Court cards, I believe it helps you intuitively understand the card, with a more heart centered meaning for you. She touches on the importance of numerology, as well as the feminine and masculine energies of the cards. If you are looking to go to a higher level in your Tarot studies and perhaps get closer to your soul/self, this is the book to read!

There are very few people that I trust in the world of Tarot, and Mariana is one of them. I’ve taken a couple of her courses over the last two years, and her approach to teach and help one absorb the meaning of the cards and interpretation is by far the best I have experienced. I am only about 20 pages in, but I can tell already, this book is going to become my holy grail of all things tarot. Highly recommend for those that want an in depth, but approachable and digestible guide book and reference!!

Let me just say… for someone who has stepped into the world of Tarot and knowing a bit if nothing about tarot.. this has definitely helped to look at it in a different perspective.
I absolutely love this book and would absolutely recommend it.
Audiobook format is A+ ♥️

¡El mejor recurso para una comprensión jungiana y profunda de las cartas! Sería maravilloso que este libro sea traducido al español.

What I liked most about this book was how the author’s voice came through in her writing. I felt her gentle presence with me while I was reading her work. She did a terrific job explaining her genuine knowledge on what she knew and how to interpret what was in the cards. I really liked her style of writing. It felt like being with a friend.

Wonderful book! My copy is loaded with underlined highlights!
This is a book that sets itself apart from the ocean of tarot books that are available out there. I’ve been reading Tarot (and reading *about* Tarot) for about 25 years now, and this book earned a space on my most honored and special shelf of prized material. I will return to it over and over.
While it is academic-like in content, the author has a gift of writing in a very practical way that engages the reader and makes pragmatic applications to real life as well as our inner world.
The content heavily leans on the teachings of Carl Jung and Jungian Psychology. There is extensive discussion about what “individuation” is (separating the authentic “you” from what the outside world has conditioned us to believe we should be). She also goes into the layers of the psyche, and how even the deepest, unknown parts of the psyche are revealed through the mirror of tarot (that actually, this is what is easiest for tarot to reveal: the most hidden aspects of ourselves). She mentions that both the macrocosm (large world events) and the microcosm (our internal personal world) are both interconnected and intertwine within a tarot reading as well as in real life.
Synchronicities are defined by Jung as 2 unrelated happenings that have a meaningful connection to the person experiencing them. The book has an exciting section how this sychronicitization of matter is summoned when we do a tarot reading, and how even the most unknown aspects deep in our psyche can come to the surface. I was thrilled to read that there may be even more synchronicities around us every moment of every day that we may be missing!
The author includes some very powerful spreads in the back of the book. One is just a 2-card spread called “Tension of Opposites,” but it blew my mind. I tried it on several aspects of my life and it was a powerful catalyst for understanding. Larger spreads after that include a 4-card spread with a focal point in the center, and a 10-card spread that looks like a 9-card box spread, with a “what crosses you” card across the center card. This box spread is broken down into sections vertically as well as horizontally, to create very insightful dialogue within the reader.
The book includes card meanings for every card, and each has a psychological slant that helped me experience the Rider Waite Smith cards in a unique way with personal twist. Each card meaning includes the inverted (reversed) meaning of the card as well.
Highly recommended, this is a book you’ll want to slowly devour, like a gourmet meal. Get a taste of each chapter, gain powerful insights, and enjoy the learning journey! This book is highly recommended and should not be missed!

An excellent book. If you’re interested in archetypal tarot but have found it intimidating in the past, this book is both approachable and in-depth. Not only does the reader gain a solid understanding of Jungian psychology, but Louis also provides a thorough explanation of the tarot cards through that lens. I received this book only a few days ago and found it impossible to put down. It offers valuable insights for both experienced practitioners and newcomers alike. After reading it, you’ll never take a synchronicity for granted again.
