“I received this marshmallow root in a generous, resealable bag filled to the brim. Brewing it according to the label instructions was simple, and the result was a delicious cup of tea with a rich marshmallow root flavor and a pleasant aroma. The large bag and long expiration date (Dec 2027) mean I’ll be enjoying this relaxing tea for a while. Quality marshmallow root at a very reasonable price – highly recommended! “

I was disappointed when I opened the bag of “cut and sifted” marshmallow root. This is NOT cut and sifted! It is large shreds! So now, before I can use it I have to figure out how to make it smaller pieces, because it is too bulky to accurately measure, to make a quart of tea. As you can see from my photo, there are big chunks of wood. How am I supposed to make tea from hard chunks of wood??? In person, it is obvious that this shredded root is full of DIRT! They obviously didn’t rinse it when they took it out of the ground (maybe because that adds to the weight?)
After taking the big chunks of wood out, I tried chopping the coarsely shredded marshmallow root in the dry container of my VitaMix. In order to chop it, I had to leave it on too long and the root got hot down by the blade. So, I turned it off and left it to cool. Then I tried my Cuisinart and there were 1-1/2×1/4” pieces of woody stem that got caught on the blade and the machine wouldn’t turn it.
I had checked online and learned that what I need (to make 1 gallon of tea) is 240 grams of root. Originally I was going to measure it after chopping it, and learned that I need 2 cups of cut & sifted. When I went back and weighed what I had in the dry container, was more like 3 cups of 1/2” pieces of root and it only weighed 155 grams. So, now I am in a quandry about what to do. By the time I add 85 grams it will most likely be 4 cups.
After I took some out of the bag and saw what was left, it didn’t look right, so I took the root out of the bag and weighed it (1 pound equals 453.5 grams. So, 453.5-155 = 298.5 should be left in the bag. But, what was left in the bag only weighed 280.5 grams (155g +280.5 = 435.5g leaving it 18.5g short) . Hmmm, I got cheated!
The actual product weighed 435.5g or 15 ounces, meaning the seller is cheating their customers out of one ounce. But, there is the issue of the dirt left on the roots when processed. How much did THAT weigh??? Then, to add insult to injury, when I took all of the root out of the bag and put it in a bowl, I found a LOT of big, solid, chunks of wood – one being 2”x1-1/2”x3/4” in diameter, another being 1-1/2x1x1/2” in diameter! The photos in the ad for this product don’t look ANYTHING like what I got (long, dirty shreds with big chunks of wood), so I have included a photo of the hard wood chunks I found. Those can’t go into the VitaMix or Cuisinart because they are too hard. So, I weighed those and it turns out I got cheated out of another 1-1/2 ounces, which means I only got 13.5 ounces of herb, not 16 ounces.
In the end, I put it all in the trash. With the herb being from Pakistan and being full of dirt, who knows what bacteria and toxins are in the roots??? There is no way I’m going to put THAT in my body!!! So, BUYER BEWARE!
UPDATE: I ordered cut & sifted marshmallow root, from another company, and got the real deal. I’m adding a photo of what it is supposed to look like – not long, dirty shreds with big chunks of hard woody root.

Great product, does have a very earthy taste, but I do feel it’s helping improve my gut health 🙂 I mix it with fennel seeds and a few cloves

I recently quit smoking. Marshmallow root helps with lung issues. I use one tablespoon in the mesh teapot at work. I get 4 good cups out of it and it’s great value. I add local honey to sweeten it because I don’t like the taste. It’s been helping me breathe better. It’s a huge part of recovering from smoking. It’s a great size for the dollar. Quality is great. Effective for the reason I bought it
